NCO camp 2010

The NCO camp ended with a bang. Good improvement started to be seen in the secondary 1 and 2 squad during the later part of day 2. As instructors successfully inculcated the meaning of 'team work' in the cadets. Not only did cadets move as one, they looked out for each other and took care of each other periodically - as opposed to the first day, when cadets cared only about their well being.

Campfire was great with new ideas pouring in. It started with a fire bird descending gracefully in to the camp fire. The cadets never failed to produce good standards in their performances. The theme 'comedy night' was a novelty, and definitely appealed to all after a tough day in camp.

The fun didn't end there. In the wee hours of the 3rd morning, cadets were awoken. On falling in, they realized a fellow cadet was missing! Everyone in the unit (yes, instructors too) were in a state of panic and started looking all over for the missing cadet! In this activity, cadets learn how to work as a team, and how important it is to look out for one another.

When it was time to break camp, all instructors went around shaking the hands of campers and had a good private conversation with as many campers as time would allow. This was a great time for campers to know, through the 3 days camp, what was observed of them from their activities.

It was a great camp and all were reluctant to leave. Nevertheless, time soon came for all to wave our goodbyes and return home for a good rest.

Well done everyone, Instructors and campers. Have a good break before the school reopens in 3 weeks. Also, a reminder to complete your school homework! (:

Sec1s, please get together to exchange notes copied and received during the Crime Prevention Lecture. You are required to hand up your project on the first training of the year 2011.

NCO Camp Day 1

So the count down began for many, as seen on facebook.
"2 more weeks to NCO camp", then "2 more days to NCO camp" and finally "NCO camp is here"
Such high level of enthusiasm is really commendable of cadets and instructors.

The fall in time was 730 on the first day, yet more than half the unit were seen waiting at the canteen around 6am!
730 sharp, the cadets were in their squads and ready with their neck id bands, and their squad flags. How far can they push themselves this camp? How much can they motivate themselves to achieve beyond the usual?
We'll see in a few days. (:

hike hike hike...

Howdy! (: hyped up for the 1970 theme...
those who still have no idea what 1970 means, its important!!! ask your friends.

Yesterday, we had a great time hiking through Singapore's sunny island, Sentosa. The day started great with heavy rain... Gosh.. we so wanted to continue lying in bed didnt we? haha.. but even more appealing was the hike that we wanted to start.

Reaching Sentosa, Officers, CIs, NCOs and cadets were already itching to make a move from the start point. Once everything were accounted for, everyone decided to move to the first check point.

On reaching the first check point, the groups were told to think of a group name and cheer. The four groups were: xiong xiong, wild fire, penguin army, and sotongs of the sea. So the groups cheered to hype up the event. "Xiong xiong here, xiong xiong there, xiong xiong everywhere!" went one group, while the group beside were cheering to the tune 'purple light'... "purple light... in the mountains...with my penguin, my army and meeee...."

Teams were then asked to play a short caterpillar game and bury one of their team member in the sand.

Once the first check point was over, cadets had to proceed to the next check point on their own. The game was played such that at each check point, a clue will be given to the team members in the form of pictures. Teams will then guess the next location based on the pictures.

Around 1pm, it was time to break for lunch. Look at this... awesome food! Mummy's love from home. yummy!

After lunch, bottles of water were filled up. The unit hydrated together and then we moved out again. we made our way to one of the last check point- the Sentosa nature discovery walk. Here cadets had to find out the names of various bugs.
We walked quite a distance on the elevated walk way. It was built on top the old monorail line.

Soon, time was running out. We took a bus to the bus coach area and switched bus to the one which would bring us back to HIHS.

Indeed, it was a tiring day of hike. Everyone did well. This is one of the first major events conducted by the NCOs and it deserves a round of applause. Well done NCOs! Well done Cadets! Not forgetting the officers and CIs who helped to make the event possible.
===============================
I caught something quite funny when i looked through the pictures.
Have a great holiday!

Training 22nd October

After a period of exams, its time to let down our hair and enjoy the fun CCA we all enjoy! (:

-------------------
All in a nutshell...
The sec2squad had a great time in their 3rd class drill test. Many were able to recall commands and drills during the test. Cadets were marked stringently over a set of criteria. Well wait for the results, and those who pass can safely say, you have an acceptable standard in drills.

The NCO squad enjoyed a day of 2nd class drill revision. Rifle drills were involved and although the rifles were heavy, each cadet did their best to hold on tight to the rifles. Each NCO was given a chance to practice their word of command.

The NCO squad ended the day well with Jeslin and Fiona carrying out their own debrief.

end of nutshell

Just for laughs: if our events in a day can fit in a nutshell, does that make us nuts?
--------------------
All cadets, have a great weekend ahead. Drink lots of water and do not go out playing especially with PSI levels being at quite a high level.

signing off...HO Avriel ^^

17th Sept 2010

Today's training had been quite impressive. The sec 1 and 2s fall-in on time and were in ready position by the time instructors and NCOs flooded the area. CI Chee Sheng then gave a really impressive lecture on Uniform etiquette (impressive from the pictures to the details.)

Today also marks the first day HIHS NCOs take over their individual squads for a lesson or two on drills.
After drills, the unit played dog and bone while a few cadets took their LCP test and another small group of cadets tried to do the CSSP.

Unfortunately, the art room printer wasn't working too fine, we had to use the ones in the office. With the drafts printed out, each group will have until Saturday night to send in the corrected version of their projects.

This coming Monday, the groups doing the video on "theft" will be showing the video during assembly. 1245pm. The main speaker will be.............*we'll keep this as a secret till monday*

To all who did their best today, have a great weekend!

NHB
Sec 3 cadets had their NHB briefing today. Let's hope they do well for the NHB project. We'll see what the NCOs can do to impress us (:

CSSP
This week, the sec2s cadets and Sec3 NCOs spent 2 hours on session 2 of CSSP.
During session 2, the individual groups finalized what they hope to do.
In their decisions, we considered the SMART model.
That is: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Timely.

At the end of the session, we left with objectives in mind.
The datelines are as follows:
Goals that require preparation: videos, poster designs, survey forms - submit by 8th September 2010.
Goals that require no/little prior preparation: patrols - accomplish by 24th September 2010.

Time is tight. we'll push on. Not as groups... not as teams... but as one.

27th training. Everyone were such good cadets (:

Wow it's been another fulfilling day in HIHS NPCC. It's been so fun, everyone (yes cadets, CIs, HO and i believe teachers too) are all waiting for the next npcc training.. aww... and yet we hear there wont be training next week. hahaha..

Highlights for today, the sec1s have improved a lot in terms of their response (i can only blog about what i know, and this is what i noticed! (= ) It was funny because i went about asking what their ambition was and no one actually knew. Oh this is really out of point, but i have to say that erika's (sorry if i got your name wrong, i'll change it if its wrong) wallet has a really nice design.

Oh then we had the sec3 postings! hahhaa... really hope you guys love your postings. You must always remember that every post is important! We are only as strong as the weakest person. You imagine everyone ready to go for a hike and then suddenly we look back to see that the logistics are all not ready.. we cant move on right? Or if everyone wants to start the camp and then the admin takes so extremely long to get the attendance, everyone will have to wait right? So dont and never think a post is less important in any way!
Anyway, i truly am happy with the postings. I think it has been very well planned (:
The NCOs are happy with their postings.
I was just facing them when they rushed towards the camera
and started posing. haha

Sec2 squad were great too. We, had a great time during CSSP lecture. Although Gabriel and Raymond seemed to be chatting all the time about everything, from their latest homework to their house kitchen sink, but they were able to respect those who were speaking too. That's something really nice (:
Then we had Sebastian's group sitting in one whole line like as though i was expected to sing them a song in some Singapore idol variety show.
In all, it was great knowing that the sec3s and sec2s were able to carry out conducive discussions and keeping quiet when the CIs and I were speaking.

Ok... so for those who have yet to submit CP, i told you i would inform you when to submit it. I have not been able to confirm a date yet, but it should be some time next week.
Enjoy the good weekend, you guys have done great during this week's training.

Signing off, HO Avriel!

Crime Prevention Project

21st August: Inter NPCC 4x100m relay

whooo...The sec3s on my msn seem awake, and everyone tells me they are still rushing to finish crime prevention project. I guess the sec2s are some how awake trying to finish the project too. NPCC will start in less than 24 hours and everyone is excited.

Fun Bites

Jer Ruey and Eric senses something wrong.. but they cannot figure what yet...

Now Eric figures whats wrong...He alerts me about it. Jer Ruey's face starts to turn disappointed because he cant figure what is missing.

After passing them the trophy, Eric and Jer Ruey are happy again!

Updates!
Last Saturday our NPCC unit participated in an inter unit relay run. It was the first time i actually saw our cadets running so quickly. CPL Jeslin, the one who always claims to be unable to run, actually over took 2 other npcc cadets! In the end of the eventful relay, we received a trophy! Yay...

In all, we had loads of fun...even during travel.

Signing off... HO Avriel!
