Flash back: PYA reflection

On 6th April 2011, the secondary 3 to 5 cadets were involved in a Police Youth Ambassador (PYA) event. After a briefing was conducted by 2 officers from the Hougang NPC, those involved in PYA were split in to two different groups. The task was simple - to spread information on loan shark harassment to the residents near our school.

The cadets and I were honored and glad to be working together with two police officers from the Hougang Neighborhood Police Centre. I felt it was important to allow residents in our community better understand the dangers of getting in contact with loan sharks; educate them on how they could aid the police in the arrest of loan sharks and their runners; and how they can take down the description of suspicious characters before informing the police.

Being a Police youth Ambassador, I have learnt how to better communicate with the residents. I hope that with the little help as an NPCC cadet, we can have a better and safer community to live in.

Training 30-03-2011

So quickly, term 1 ended and now we're already in the midst of term 2.
Today's training has been one of the most fun and interesting trainings.
I noticed the great enthusiasm of cadets, and instructors such that I feel compelled to blog about the day's training.

The day started at 3pm. The sec 3 squad was ready at 2.50pm. While the rest of the squads were ready promptly at 3. From the start of training, the NCOs who were available performed their task diligently and with pride. Without much needing to be explained, the NCOs performed their routine task and within a short time, the unit was ready to continue with training activities.

Sec3 squad: Following the sec3 squad during their rifle drill session, I could see that the squad needed more practice on rifle drills. Not only did they require practice, they needed to learn the right way of executing after each command. The process of learning each execution was tough, but every single sec 3 cadet persevered and continuously improved themselves. ACI Seok Kee was on the ball at the task of imparting her knowledge to the cadets as she constantly advised them how to improve from their mistakes. I had the privilege to take the sec3 cadets for rifle drill just before the promotion parade started. From there, i was able to see how they had improved since the drill session started with ACI Seok Kee.

Sec2 squad: Forming up along the small path beside the canteen, the sec2 squad began their baton drill practice. NCO Nigel taught them the basics of handling the batons, and proceeded to more in depth drills such as saluting. The sec2 cadets remembered how to perform each drill, but were not used to executing each drill together in timing with the whole squad. That was not a problem, as very quickly after a few practices, the cadets could follow NCO Nigel's commands. Way to go sec 2s!
*Just a reminder: In the last position of hormat with baton, your baton is suppose to point 45degrees towards the ground.

Sec1 squad: The sec1 squad really brightened my day. Well actually everyone did. But the sec1 squad was really impressive. Starting off the day not knowing how to perform Keluar Baris and Bersu Rai, the sec1 squad was taken by NCO Eric to remove their doubts and queries of both the commands. Sure, they had to keep practicing, and at one point, many turned grumpy! However, everyone knew they wanted to get the drill right. They took a short break and got ready for a second wave of practice. The practice proved fruitful at the end of the day, as the sec1 squad could dismiss in a similar fashion as their seniors. Well done sec1s!

At the later part of the training, we had a promotion parade (I'll blog about this another time).
The training ended on time following the time table and cadets were dismissed immediately after training.

I do hope to see such enthusiasm from everybody (cadets, NCOs and all instructors) every training. Keep up the good spirit and continue to have a hunger for knowledge. For the sec 1 and 2s, have the joy of wanting to know what your seniors already know. For the sec3s, focus on perfecting what you already know, and start to master the new things you learn. NCOs, ACIs and CIs, well done and let us continue this standard of training and end on time too!

Most importantly, to everyone, remind each other to train with a smile!

Have fun everyone and see you next training.

Some comments from the cadets who participated in ARSC 2011

Firing the rifle was a totally awesome experience! This is an experience I will never forget as it was the first time I handled an air rifle. When I first saw the rifle, I thought it was very light, but I was wrong. It was much heavier than I imagined. When I first saw others firing the bullet, I thought it was a piece of cake firing at the scorecard. But it was difficult shooting at the 6-10 point area. Aiming was difficult as my hands were unable to keep still.
My confidence increased, after receiving valuable tips from our seniors and instructors. On the day of the competition, I was very nervous. Being very new to this experience, I was afraid of missing too many shots. However, during my test shot, I was surprised to see that I could fire well. In all, it was an experience I am glad to have achieved, and I hope to participate in more such activities in future.

The air rifle shooting competition was very interesting. It was a really rare opportunity for us NPCC cadets to be able to handle an air rifle. Only eight out of the whole secondary 3 squad was chosen and being one of them, I felt honored. When we first had our dry firing practice, the instructors were very friendly during the briefing. They were well-prepared and made sure that every single detail is gone though so that the cadets would not make common mistake. I had little confidence of my air rifle skills before the actual briefing. Afterwards there was a round of practice and I further sharpened my skills. On the actual day of the competition, the atmosphere was tense and everyone was very attentive and serious. The rifle was light and much easier to use than I expected. So it was easier for me to get an accurate shot. However, we still had to apply our knowledge from previous training. I hit a bulls-eye. Overall, I found this a one-in-a lifetime experience and it is very unique. I feel that it would allow me to have a score in the secondary magnum live firing marksman badge. I would join the competition again if given another chance to do so.

The air-rifle shooting championship was a great experience for me. We learnt how to load an air rifle, take up various shooting positions, and finally shoot. Things like safety precautions were very important and a briefing was also held to tell us what to expect on the competition day itself. The competition was a good platform for us to build our confidence and self-esteem.
A dry shoot and live firing training conducted before the actual competition was where we learnt our basics about the air-rifle. It was also where we shot the rifle for the first time. This experience was a good one and we all enjoyed it very much. In a nutshell, we learnt many things there and I hope there would be more of such activity.

I love the air rifle competition! It is awesome and adds a little more flavor to our usual NPCC activities. In the full course of my experience, I faced some difficulties such as using my non-master eye and also the strength needed to pump the gun. Although I was the reserve, I enjoyed my time through the event.
I would like this activity to be carried on for the other generations of NPCC cadets as it was very fun and interesting. Though it was a pity we missed the top three positions just slightly, I believe team dynamics was core to the experience. I want to thank Mr Suhaimi and Avriel sir for allowing us to participating in the event, and giving the necessary funds.

ARSC 2011 - HIHS NPCC came in 4th place.

Air Rifle Shooting Competition 2011

Recently, HIHS NPCC took part in an air rifle shooting competition.
The cadets who were able to participate had no prior air rifle shooting experience.
After a short practice on 22th and 28th January, the cadets were sent for the competition on 29th January at Home Team NS Shooting Range (Bukit Batok).

The results were really good. One team got in to the 4th place, while another made it in to the 25th place.
Well done to the teams!
